Like most people my grandfather’s age they don’t always embrace the latest and greatest techlogy. It’s not to say he was living like a cave man before he moved in with my parents. He had a HDTV, VHS/DVD player, microwave and a beta player. Yeah you don’t see those around anymore. He’s never own a cell phone or an e-reader/tablet…until now that is.
This past Christmas my dad and step mom Cathy gave him a tablet. The look of confusion on he face when he opened the gift. Just screamed what is this? The main use was to get him to read off of it. He loves to read (it’s sometime we have in common) one of his favitote authors is John Grisham. My grandfather reads about 100 pages a day; so he burns threw books very quick. And the e-reader was to keep up with him.
Now that he has 24 hours, 7 days a week access to the Wi-Fi and doesn’t have to leave his La-Z-Boy recliner. Means there isn’t a day that goes by that he’s not on his tablet doing one thing or another.
I thought I never would say this but my grandfather has an email account. But wait that’s not all he also has a facebook account. That’s right my grandfather has a facebook account. Just the other day I went to show him a photo that my cousin Tina posted of her one month old son Wendell and he already had it up to show me. He also informed me of a funny post my cousin Jeremy put on his wall. Yes he used the correct term “wall.”
One of the funniest things that I have seen is when he plays games on his tablet. In fact it’s really just one game, and that game is “Angry Birds.” If you have never played the game the object of the game is to use a slingshot to launch birds at pigs stationed on or in that levels structures which you are trying to destroy. It’s fun for all ages.
As he plays he says things like “Pork it’s what’s for dinner.” “Stop looking at me like that pig.” and “I will get you next time pig just wait and see.” I don’t think he even knows that he is doing it. But for some reason it’s very entraining to me.
I shouldn’t be surprised that my grandfather has become a somewhat Internet savvy. He has fought for his country, survived cancer and the loss of his wife. Any hurdle that comes his way he’s willing to take it head on. He’s not going to let something like technology get in his way.
So grandpa Tyler welcome to the 21st century and may you enjoy every moment of it.
Amber’s grandfather even enjoys a cup of cameral mocha brewed using a Keurig Coffee brewing system. Someone has also introduced him to the game Candy Crush.
